Interview: Christian Beiersdorf – SAZ (English)

Christian BeiersdorfTo shine a light on the ‘local’ tabletop games scene in Europe we post interviews with industry participants (professionals). This time we welcome Christian Beiersdorf from Germany who has been active in the industry for many years and currently is manager of the SAZ, an international Game designers Association.

What has been your career? (which roles did you take on / noticable projects or tasks?)

I started in the print industry in Munich and then in a publishing house in Italy. 1984 I came to F.X.Schmid as editor with a rather successful time (e.g. Auf Achse, Adel verpflichtet, Bluff). Later I changed to ASS and Ravensburger (e.g. Lotti Karotti) as product manager. 2001 I started my own agency PROJEKT SPIEL with freelance developing work and being agent for other game authors. 2009 I was elected in the board of SAZ first time – keeping this job until 2015.

What is your current role at the SAZ?

Since 2015 I am manager of SAZ. This was a new function to approve the actions of the board and to handle the ever more extensive tasks. We are growing, which means more administration and more support: currently we have about 500 members. Particularly the lobby work takes additionally a lot of time and requires personal continuity. Main themes are author rights, social assurance for freelance game authors, the official recognition of the cultural asset games, public lending rights and remunerations for game authors, special tax problems. Our website gives you a good overview – also in English.

What is the SAZ and what does it offer to game designers?

The “Game Designers Association” (SAZ) represents the interests of game authors to the public as well as to publishers and other work users. Beside the already mentioned activities we support members e.g. with hints for better contracts, with some brochures containing all important knowledge all around game developing, with conventions like Göttingen to bring authors and publishers together, with free entrance to the Toy Fair in Nürnberg, advanced training vouchers, 10% discount at spielmaterial.de and some more benefits – published on our website.

Gö-Spiele Spieleautorentreffen in der Stadthalle - Besuchertag

The SAZ is international oriented. How do you ensure/strenghten this (from Germany)?

Yes, we are international oriented and have members in 21 countries all over the world till Brazil and South Korea. Of course, our main base is Germany. Here we have the most members and no language barrier. Nevertheless, we communicate in English with members in other countries and explain our targets to all game authors abroad. We see all our actions here in Germany as well as a blue-print for other countries. Since 2017 we have our first national group in Italy with now nearly 50 members. From our point of view, it needs for such a step a certain base of members and some persons who are willing to take on -not only short time- responsibility.

Why would it be worth thinking about a national group of SAZ in the Netherlands?

First of all, we have in the Netherlands already 13 members. And we know that there are a lot more game authors which are not yet organized. In a national group, it is much easier to respond to national particularities and to exchange ideas in the own language. And, taking into account the importance of the EC in Europe, we can engage together with political initiatives for the special interests of game authors as well as for the cultural asset of games. Additionally, we create more internationally power in order to oppose author unfriendly ambitions, e.g. from publishers.

What changes in the tabletop game industry have you witnessed?

Within the last 35 years a lot happened. The number of new analog publications has increased almost tenfold. This is interesting under the parallel development of digital games. This shows that the often expressed opinion that analogue games have no future is nonsense. Beside of that, we have hybrid games as well, using elements of both worlds. Even more important is the growing gap between games for the mass market and for multiple players, which has also led to an amazing start-up scene of new publishing houses. Some of which are or have become very successful. The publication of games is increasingly less a classic publishing business, and more a marketing driven international business. This also partly changes the relationship between game authors and companies – not always for the better.

Do you see future trends?

Hard to say. I wish there would be more games that really tell a story, than just working with mechanism. There is the (very successful!) early bird Catan, there are Pandemic and Safehouse to name at least some of them. Generally, the digital games are currently better in telling stories.

What advice would you give to a game designer?

Have an open view to all aspects of your environment, to all culture developments, to all themes of the society. Don’t think only in mechanism but more in themes. Team up with others to use the different skills for great new game developments. And … become a member of SAZ 😉!

Thank you for your time Christian!

Interview: Liesbeth Bos (English)

To shine a light on the ‘local’ scene we will offer interview industry professionals and 25017856_1974405899550731_9068188902740721664_nvolunteers that are active at our Guild or in other ways. We are very happy Liesbeth Bos was willing to participate. Without further ado, her replies to our curiosity:

How are you active in the industry? You are a designers and work for publishers, could you tell about those roles?

As a designer I design childrens and lighter family games, always language independent. Lately also only with my co designer Anja Dreier Brückner. I do not have time to design just by myself anymore.

As an agent for publishers I can do different things. My main projects right now is localizing their games outside of the territories they are already sell to.

What are some titles you work(ed) on for localisation?

My job is easy, I have picked publishers to work for whose games I love 🙂 Roll Player is the title I started with; we have been able to publish it in 11 languages at the moment. Our expansion, Monsters and Minions, is following in probably all of these languages too as well as the rest of our Roll Player line.

Other than that I am totally in love with Dual Powers; revolution 1917. A 1-2 player game. It just hit retail and is starting to get signed globally as well.

For van Ryder games the hottest line I am working on right now is Hostage Negotiator. This publisher is doing everything a little bit different, which makes pitching their games a lot of fun.

Our largest game; Detective, City of Angels will come out soonish. It will be a huge box (Gloomhaven size) with a deduction game which can be played in many different ways and with a great new system that makes this game feel like you are in a 1940’s setting, fighting crime in L.A.

What is your background and what skills and knowledge you feel is useful in your roles?

🙂 I am an advertisement and graphic designer as well as an industrial designer. It helps me a teeny bit in making prototypes. It helps a lot on knowing how the manufacturing process works. Yes I can find something really cheap online or in a store and spray paint it in four different colors. Yet, to make tooling for this and have it being produced in different colors for a low first print run is usually not feasible. That kind of knowledge I use when I design games so we can come up with something that looks new and not done before, but is actually not that difficult or costly to produce.

What tips do you have for designers that have a concept ready to pitch to publishers?

Playtest.

Write good rules.

Make sure your game has some functional art, it should not look ready to print though.

Make it “idiot” proof. You should not have the publisher learn or memorize things like “these pawns should actually be cars” and “these cards are named -enter weird name- ”.

What do you like best, feel is most interesting in your different roles? (designing games, being a representative for publishers)

I overall love my freedom! I can work from home, but the internet and Skype have given me the opportunity to work for anyone in the world. And with my iPad and a good set up of the the projects I am working on, I can also travel and work from anywhere in the world. The companies I work for are not in Europe, a majority of our partners are. But I have also found us partners in Asia. It doesn’t matter, I am online 24/7 and answer anyone whenever something comes in. If it is too much I just mute my phone for a while.

With my co designer and other potential co designers, I also work through emails, messenger and Skype. My number one co designer lives in Essen. We visit each other every 2-3 weeks because we tinker a lot with materials.

I am not sure if that is the most interesting, but the most appealing to me.

That plus going to conventions. The game world is “small.”

It feels like we are one traveling circus family of (close) friends. At conventions you work a lot but you also get to catch up with everyone.

Which game that you (co)desigend are you most proud of and why?

Poh… Currently I think that Polar Party from Pegasus is a favorite. Our developer there saw what we wanted to do with this and sourced the best material for it. With little material you can create an immersive world of icebergs, penguins and fish.

Another feature, in the same game, is having a whale who can really eat fish. Having two “gadgets” in one game is a first.

My co designer and I are known for our “gadgets” and weird way of thinking about materials and uses. Not everything we design comes out as crazy as we have originally planned it, but in this case it did and that is really cool.

Could share some pictures of work in progress?

Weeehooo Weeehooo (Martinex) in cooperation with Anja Dreier Brückner, prototype and final game:

Polar Party (Pegasus Kids) in cooperation with Anja Dreier Brückner, prototype and final game:

Wackelbett (HABA) designed by me, prototype and final game:

Where can we learn more about you and your work?

Hmmm… You can probably follow me best on Instagram. That is where I post the most game-only things. Or twitter, but I am a bit slacking there lately. And on BGG.

(I am wondering if I have updated all of the newest games… but they probably are on it)

Thank you for your time Liesbeth!

Looking back: Leeuwarden event March 2019

-Friso

Last Friday we left our trusted spot in the Blokhuispoort to test our games at the Leeuwarden boardgames association UCP. Although feedback from other boardgame designers can be very valuable, sometimes you just need to hear the brutal and honest truth from boardgame players. That’s why our relocation to the UCP was a pleasant change. Furthermore, the familiar faces were present, but we also welcomed a new boardgame designer.

I’m looking forward to meet more boardgame designers in Leeuwarden and I am curious how the tested games will evolve in future iterations. See you at the next Tabletop Testing Night! -Friso

Looking back: Groningen Testing Night

Last Friday 1 March once again we had a good time. Several players and designers playtested a multitude of games. Check out the pictures below 🙂 The next tabletop gam playtest night in Groningen will happen the first Friday of April. And in 2 weeks the next playtesting event in Leeuwarden will happen!

Looking back: Leeuwarden event February 2019

– Mitchel
The third playtesting night in the Blokhuispoort in Leeuwarden was a big success! With 8 participants we decided to split up into two testing groups, playing 4 games in total. After the play testing sessions there was a long round of discussion and general feedback, so I’m hoping the designers got to bring some interesting opinions with them. I for one am looking forward to the next iteration of the games. See you next month!
